A STORE selling surplus food at low prices to those in need is officially open in Wellington this month.
The Best Before Food Store will officially open on Tuesday, September 20 at 1 p.m. at The Well, Christian Center in Rockwell Green, formerly Rockwell Green Christian Centre.
Cllr Mark Lithgow, Mayor of Wellington, and his wife Sarah will attend the launch event, along with representatives from local community organizations, Best Before Food Store administrators, volunteers and early store members.
The Best Before Food Store is a new community project that has been developed over the past six months in partnership with local food pantry programs in Somerset West and Taunton.
For £4 a week, members will be able to get fresh, chilled and ambient foods that would normally have cost between £15 and £20.
The food will come mainly from the charity Fareshare, which redistributes surplus food through community and charity groups to those who need it most.
In addition to the pop-up grocery store, members will also benefit from a social space where they can enjoy refreshments and a chance to chat and make new friends.
Activities for children will be offered, as well as opportunities to take part in a program of fun and educational events, such as cooking demonstrations.
The store will also provide signage to other services that support people in the community.
Paula Appleby, project manager for the programme, said: “The launch will be an exciting day as we move from planning and developing the project to opening our doors and helping people.
“We have a fantastic team of volunteers who will run the store and together we want to provide a service that builds community and helps people in these tough economic times.”
It is hoped to open more Best Before Food stores in different parts of Wellington in the future, so that even more people can benefit from low cost food and participate in building a strong community together.
The Best Before Food Store will normally take place every Tuesday afternoon from 3pm at the Well Centre, Rockwell Green.
Full membership costs £4 and includes a weekly visit to the pop-up store, plus access to the social space and activities.
Associate members can register for free to access the social space and additional activities.
