PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) — A series of events this weekend welcome people back to downtown Portland, including a food cart pod, which is reopening in a new location. These are food carts that were originally located southwest of 10th Avenue and southwest of Alder Street, which had to relocate for the construction of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.
The new location is at the south end of the North Park blocks, just off West Burnside Street and Northwest Park Avenue. Keith Jones, executive director of Friends of Green Loop, said 18 food carts from the original location will reopen and this is just the first phase.
Jones says the hope is to continue adding more food carts heading to Director Park in the future. This is a unique model in that these food carts are on the street and poses new questions about logistics with electricity and water hookups.
Jones acknowledges that it was not the old location that gained popularity, but this reopening gives a chance for new growth. “I heard it was a magical place. And it was really I mean there was a lot of activity there, but I would also like to remind everyone that it wasn’t magic on the first day. You know, it was a parking lot with a few food carts, and then it grew over time. So what we need is people to come out and support this,” he said.
These food carts open at 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays.
